START PLANNING YOUR SPRING CLEANING
Your home needs some TLC after winter:
Winter is rough on homes. Changes in temperature from balmy to below freezing, high winds, ice, snow and low humidity affect the structure and build of a house. Maintenance and upkeep of the home should include a thorough spring cleaning. Some tips:
- Make a list of chores to tackle. This keeps you organized and on task. Prepare by getting the supplies you will need.
- Can we say gutters? Those hard working channels of metal take a lot of abuse. Cleaning leaves, debris and build up is paramount to the proper function of gutters and to keep water damage and foundation issues from arising.
- The roof is the first line of defense against water damage. A good look for loose shingles and other damage is important. Call us if you need someone to take a look at the roof.
- Windows, not our favorite chore, but they surely look awesome when clean!
- Yard debris from wind and ice. A potential problem if not removed since it can clog drainage in the yard.
- That fence may need a little TLC and a few nails/screws replaced as well as some boards or panels. If there's a gate, it may need an adjustment and replacement of hardware.
- Decks do take a beating during the winter and checking for loose screws or nails prevents further damage. Also, some boards may need to be replaced if they are splintered or cracked. A good pressure wash removes dirt, mold and mildew and makes the deck look like new.
- Driveways should be checked for cracks and lifting.
- The front steps may need some fixing up. Loose steps are a hazard.
- Let's not forget the front door! Tighten the hinges and hardware, replace the weather stripping (if needed) and give it a good scrub to greet spring! Place a nice, colorful wreath to welcome spring.
- The landscaping is waiting to get pruned and fertilized. Soon your blooms will be out!
- The best way to care for your home is a good pressure wash. Careful with the roof, though!
- A home that is well maintained will have fewer repairs and problems. Take care of your biggest investment!
